Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tiered system of supports that is designed to help struggling students in math. RTI is based on the idea that all students can learn, but some students need more support than others. RTI provides a framework for identifying students who are struggling and providing them with the additional support they need to succeed.

RTI is a three-tiered system:

  • Tier I: All students receive high-quality core instruction in math.
  • Tier II: Students who are struggling in math receive additional support in small groups.
  • Tier III: Students who are still struggling in math receive intensive one-on-one support.

The goal of RTI is to provide students with the support they need to succeed in math. RTI is not a one-size-fits-all approach. The interventions that are provided to students will vary depending on their individual needs.

There are a number of evidence-based interventions that can be used to help struggling students in math. Some of the most effective interventions include:

  • Number talks: Number talks are a way to help students develop their number sense and fluency. Number talks involve students discussing different ways to solve math problems.
  • Math games: Math games can be a fun and engaging way to help students learn math concepts. Math games can be used to teach students about numbers, operations, geometry, and measurement.
  • Peer tutoring: Peer tutoring can be a helpful way for students to get extra support in math. Peer tutoring involves students working together to solve math problems.
  • Computer-assisted instruction: Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) can be a helpful way for students to practice math skills. CAI programs can be used to teach students about a variety of math concepts.
  • Intensive one-on-one support: Intensive one-on-one support can be helpful for students who are struggling in math. Intensive one-on-one support involves a teacher or tutor working with a student on a one-on-one basis to help them develop their math skills.

RTI can be implemented in the classroom by following these steps:

  1. Screen all students for math difficulties. This can be done using a variety of assessments, such as math fluency tests, number sense assessments, and math problem-solving assessments.
  2. Provide Tier I instruction to all students. Tier I instruction should be high-quality core instruction that is designed to meet the needs of all students.
  3. Provide Tier II support to students who are struggling in math. Tier II support should be provided in small groups and should be designed to help students develop the skills they need to succeed in math.
  4. Provide Tier III support to students who are still struggling in math. Tier III support should be intensive one-on-one support that is designed to help students overcome their math difficulties.

RTI has a number of benefits, including:

  • RTI can help students identify students who are struggling in math early on. This allows teachers to provide students with the additional support they need to succeed.
  • RTI can help students improve their math skills. Studies have shown that students who participate in RTI programs make significant gains in their math skills.
  • RTI can help reduce the need for special education. RTI can help students overcome their math difficulties without having to be placed in special education.

RTI is a valuable tool that can be used to help struggling students in math. RTI provides a framework for identifying students who are struggling and providing them with the additional support they need to succeed. There are a number of evidence-based interventions that can be used to help students in RTI. By implementing RTI in the classroom, teachers can help their students improve their math skills and reach their full potential.
