Edo Period (1603-1868)

The Edo period was a time of great change and upheaval for Japan. In 1603, Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa dynasty, established his government in Edo (modern-day Tokyo). Under the Tokugawa shoguns, Japan experienced a period of relative peace and stability. Edo grew rapidly, becoming a major center of commerce and culture. It was during this time that many of Tokyo's most famous landmarks were built, including the Imperial Palace and the Sensō-ji temple.

The Meiji government embarked on a series of reforms that transformed Japan into a modern nation-state. Tokyo was renamed Tokyo in 1868, and it became the capital of the new Japan.
