Warlock, by Oakley Hall, is a classic novel of suspense and the supernatural. First published in 1958, it tells the story of a young man who inherits a cursed house and the evil that dwells within it. This New York Review Classics edition includes an by Stephen King, who calls Warlock "a masterpiece of the genre."
The novel begins with the arrival of Philip Sayles at the crumbling old mansion known as Warlock House. Philip has inherited the house from his uncle, a wealthy and eccentric man who died under mysterious circumstances. Philip is initially drawn to the house's charm and history, but he soon begins to sense that something is amiss.
As Philip explores the house, he discovers a hidden room containing a strange and disturbing collection of objects. There are ancient books of magic, voodoo dolls, and human bones. Philip also begins to experience strange and frightening occurrences. He hears voices, sees apparitions, and feels a constant sense of dread.
Philip soon realizes that the house is haunted by the ghost of his uncle. The ghost is a malevolent entity that seeks to possess Philip's body and soul. Philip must find a way to defeat the ghost and break the curse that binds it to the house.
Warlock is a suspenseful and atmospheric novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Hall does a masterful job of creating a sense of dread and unease. The characters are well-developed and believable, and the plot is both complex and engaging.
