Jack Smothers
Jack Smothers was born in 1913 in San Angelo, Texas. He was the son of a rancher and a schoolteacher. Smothers attended Texas A&M University, where he studied agriculture. After graduating from college, he returned to San Angelo and worked on his family's ranch.
In 1940, Smothers was elected to the Texas House of Representatives. He served in the House for 12 years, and during that time he was a strong advocate for farmers and ranchers. In 1952, Smothers was elected to the United States Congress. He served in the House for 20 years, and during that time he was a leading voice on agricultural issues.
In addition to his political career, Smothers was also a successful rancher and businessman. He owned and operated several ranches in Texas and New Mexico. He was also a partner in a number of businesses, including a bank and a real estate development company.
Smothers was a lifelong supporter of education. He served on the board of regents of Texas A&M University for many years. He also helped to establish the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock.
Smothers died in 2006 at the age of 93. He is buried in San Angelo, Texas.
Doris Smothers
Doris Smothers was born in 1918 in Waco, Texas. She was the daughter of a physician and a homemaker. Smothers attended Baylor University, where she studied music. After graduating from college, she taught music in the public schools of Texas.
In 1940, Smothers married Jack Smothers. They had two children, a son and a daughter. Smothers was a devoted wife and mother. She was also active in her community. She served on the board of directors of the San Angelo Symphony Orchestra and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.
Smothers was a talented musician. She played the piano and organ, and she sang in the choir of her church.
Smothers died in 2010 at the age of 92. She is buried in San Angelo, Texas.
