Here My Home Once Stood is a Holocaust memoir by Martin Gray, a Polish Jew who survived the Holocaust. The book recounts Gray's experiences during the Holocaust, including his time in the Warsaw Ghetto, the Auschwitz concentration camp, and the death marches.
Gray was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1922. His family was well-to-do, and he had a happy childhood. However, everything changed in 1939 when the Nazis invaded Poland. Gray's family was forced to move into the Warsaw Ghetto, where they lived in squalid conditions.
In 1942, Gray was deported to Auschwitz concentration camp. He was tattooed with the prisoner number 70072 and forced to work as a slave laborer. Gray witnessed the horrors of Auschwitz firsthand, including the gas chambers and the crematoria.
In 1945, Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviet Army. Gray was one of the few survivors of the camp. He weighed only 85 pounds and was suffering from typhus.
After the war, Gray returned to Poland and searched for his family. He was the only survivor of his family. Gray eventually emigrated to the United States, where he married and had children.
In 1971, Gray published Here My Home Once Stood. The book was a critical and commercial success, and it has been translated into more than 30 languages. Gray's memoir is a powerful and moving account of the Holocaust, and it serves as a reminder of the horrors that can be inflicted upon humanity.
