The alto recorder is a woodwind instrument that is popular among beginner musicians. It is relatively easy to learn to play, and its sweet, mellow sound makes it a joy to listen to. One of the most important aspects of playing the alto recorder is fingering. Fingering refers to the way in which you cover the holes on the recorder with your fingers in order to produce different notes.

In this guide, we will provide you with everything you need to know about alto recorder fingering. We will start with the basics, such as how to hold the recorder and how to cover the holes. We will then move on to more advanced techniques, such as how to play sharps and flats. By the end of this guide, you will be able to confidently play any note on the alto recorder.

How to Hold the Alto Recorder

The first step to playing the alto recorder is to hold it correctly. The recorder should be held in your left hand, with the bell (the flared end of the recorder) pointing away from you. Your left thumb should rest on the thumb rest, and your left index, middle, and ring fingers should cover the three holes on the top of the recorder. Your right hand should hold the recorder near the bottom, with your thumb supporting the recorder and your right index, middle, and ring fingers covering the three holes on the bottom of the recorder.

How to Cover the Holes

Once you are holding the recorder correctly, you need to learn how to cover the holes. The holes are covered with the pads of your fingers, not the tips. When you cover a hole, make sure that your finger is completely covering the hole. If you only partially cover a hole, the note will not sound correctly.

Fingering Chart

The following fingering chart shows you how to play all of the notes on the alto recorder. The chart is divided into two sections: the left-hand fingering and the right-hand fingering. To play a note, simply cover the corresponding holes with your fingers.

Sharps and Flats

Sharps and flats are used to raise or lower the pitch of a note. A sharp raises the pitch of a note by one half step, and a flat lowers the pitch of a note by one half step. To play a sharp, simply add a # sign to the note name. To play a flat, simply add a b sign to the note name.

For example, to play a C sharp, you would cover the C hole and the C# hole. To play a G flat, you would cover the G hole and the Gb hole.

With a little practice, you will be able to master the fingering of the alto recorder. Once you have mastered the fingering, you can start learning how to play songs. The alto recorder is a versatile instrument that can be used to play a wide variety of music, from classical to folk to jazz.

So what are you waiting for? Get started today and learn how to play the alto recorder!
